Disavow file generator

Paste domains and URLs in any shape: a backlink export, a list from an audit, your old disavow file. You'll get a clean, deduplicated disavow.txt ready to upload to Google Search Console.

One per line. Commas and tabs work too, so you can paste a CSV column.

Uploading the file

  1. Open Google's disavow links tool and pick the Search Console property (it must be a domain or URL-prefix property you own).
  2. If a file is already there, download it and paste its lines into the box above so nothing gets dropped. Uploading replaces the old file.
  3. Upload disavow.txt. Google shows how many domains and URLs it parsed. Compare that with the counts here.

Before you disavow

Disavowing good links can hurt you, so be conservative. Typical candidates: links you paid for, private blog networks, scraped copies of your pages on spam domains, and foreign-language casino or pharma pages linking with keyword anchors. Low-authority blogs that genuinely mention you are normal. Leave them alone.

If the links came from outreach you did yourself, ask the site to remove them first. Disavow is for links you can't get removed.

Most sites never need to disavow anything. Before you do, check what a good link actually looks like in our guide to backlink quality, and read the white-hat link building checklist so new links don't recreate the problem.

Questions people ask

What format does Google's disavow file need?

A plain .txt file, UTF-8 or 7-bit ASCII, with one entry per line. Each entry is either a full URL (https://spam.example/page) or a whole domain written as domain:spam.example. Lines starting with # are comments. The file can be up to 2MB and 100,000 lines.

Should I disavow domains or individual URLs?

Domains, in almost every case. Spam sites usually link from many pages, and new ones appear after you submit. A domain: entry covers all of them, including subdomains. Use individual URLs only when the rest of the site is legitimate and you want to keep those links.

Does uploading a new disavow file add to the old one?

No, it replaces it. If you already have a file in Search Console, download it first, paste its contents here along with the new domains, and upload the combined result.

Do I need to disavow links at all?

Usually not. Google says most sites never need to, because its systems already ignore most spammy links. Disavow when you have a manual action for unnatural links, or a large set of links you or a previous agency paid for or built through link schemes.

How long does it take to work?

Google processes the file as it recrawls the linking pages, which can take weeks. If you're cleaning up after a manual action, submit the disavow file first, then file the reconsideration request.
