How it works
How automated link outreach works, step by step.
Automated outreach has a reputation for spam. Here is exactly what BacklinkGenie does, what it refuses to do, and where you stay in control.
-
01
It learns your product from your site
Paste your URL. The agent reads your homepage and a few other pages and writes a short profile: what you sell, who buys it, who you get compared with and what makes you different. You fix anything it got wrong and pick the name pitches are signed with. Your Ahrefs Domain Rating is saved as a starting point.
- Each post is matched to one of the audiences you list
- Competitors you name are never contacted
- You see a sample pitch before anything sends
-
02
It searches the way your buyers do
The agent runs the Google searches your buyers run: “best X for Y”, “X alternatives”, comparisons and roundups. It reads every result and keeps only articles where you'd really fit. On Growth and Agency you can also paste the posts you already want.
- Forums, marketplaces and review sites are skipped
- Sites that sell links are dropped
- Your minimum Domain Rating (and blocklist) apply first
-
03
It finds the person who can say yes
For each post it looks for the author first, then the editor or the site's contact pages. Every address is checked before it's used, because emails that bounce hurt a mailbox's reputation. Addresses that fail the check are dropped.
- Named authors preferred over generic inboxes
- Invalid addresses are never emailed
- Catch-all domains are marked so you know
-
04
It writes a pitch for that exact post
The first email names the post, says where your product would fit, and gives one reason it helps that post's readers. It's short, plain text, signed with your sender name, and never offers money. Write a style note once and every later draft follows it.
- One post per pitch, never a template blast
- Edit any draft before it sends
- Every version passes the quality gate
-
05
It handles replies and tracks the link
Replies are sorted so editors who said yes are at the top. When an editor asks what to add, the agent drafts your answer with the page URL, the link text and a sentence they can paste. Once the link is live, it's found on the page and checked again every week.
- Follow-ups stop as soon as someone replies
- Requests for payment are flagged, never accepted
- You get an email if a link is removed or made nofollow
Sending infrastructure
Why pitches come from a separate domain.
Gmail and Outlook judge every domain by how people react to its email. Keeping outreach off your main domain means your team's normal email is never at risk. On a paid plan we register a domain close to your brand, set up a Google Workspace mailbox on it, and send anyone who visits it to your real site.
The full setup, record by record, is in our outreach deliverability guide. If you run your own domains, the SPF and DMARC generator writes the records for you, and our notes on sending outreach from Google Workspace cover the daily limits.
- Separate domain
- Your main domain's reputation is never on the line.
- A real Google mailbox
- Pitches go out one at a time through Gmail, spaced across the day.
- Authenticated
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC on every sending domain.
- Yours to keep
- Free transfer to your own registrar on request.
Mailbox ramp-up
Pitches per day, per mailbox
A new domain has no history, so mail providers watch it closely. Starting at 4 a day and adding 2 every other day builds that history before the volume goes up. Full speed takes about 32 days. Plan your own ramp with the warmup calculator.
The quality gate
The rules every email has to pass.
Agent drafts, edited pitches and replies you write yourself all go through these checks. If something fails, you see which rule and a suggested rewrite.
You can run a pitch of your own through similar checks with the free outreach email checker and subject line tester.
Recipient lock
Only the contact found for that site, or a verified address on the same domain.
Link allowlist
Links may only point to your verified site. Two at most. No shorteners.
No attachments, no CC
One recipient, plain and personal, like a real email.
No paid-link offers
Offers to pay for placements are blocked, keeping you clear of Google's link spam policies.
Spam triggers
ALL-CAPS subjects, “guaranteed”, “act now” and similar patterns are rejected.
AI review
A final check for deceptive claims, fake urgency, impersonation and generic copy, with a suggested fix.
After the yes
Checked on the page, then every week.
A link only helps while it's there. Once an editor publishes yours, the agent finds it on the live page, re-checks it weekly and emails you if it's removed, so you can follow up while the editor still remembers you.
Checking a single link by hand? Paste the page into the nofollow link checker, or read how backlink monitoring works.
Links won
Every placement your outreach earned. We verify each link and re-check it weekly.

Approve or autopilot
Approve every pitch, or let it run.
By default, every pitch waits for you to approve it in the dashboard. On Growth and Agency you can also approve from Claude, Cursor or any MCP client, or switch on autopilot: the agent then finds posts, writes and sends each day within the mailbox's limit, and a daily email tells you what's waiting and what replied.
To review
Pitches the agent has written. Read, edit or approve each one. Nothing is sent without your approval.
Daily autopilot on
Every morning the agent looks for new sites and writes pitches for you to review.

DR 91 · Students, researchers and writers comparing note-taking apps
Hi there,
Your note-taking roundup has a section for students and researchers. None of the picks there keep the source attached when a quote moves from a PDF into a draft.
That's the one thing Margin does: every highlight keeps its citation, so nothing loses its reference later.
If it helps that section, I can set up a free account for you to try.
Thanks,
Ana
