Cursor integration · Updated October 16, 2026

Run link outreach from Cursor

Add one entry to Cursor's MCP config and its agent can read your pitches and replies, import posts you've found while browsing docs or competitors, and report which links went live.

Set it up

  1. 1

    Create an API key

    Create the key in BacklinkGenie under Settings → MCP. Keys start with bg_live_ and are shown once. MCP access is on the Growth and Agency plans.

  2. 2

    Add the server to Cursor

    Open Cursor Settings → MCP → Add new MCP server, or edit ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project) directly.

    ~/.cursor/mcp.json
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "backlinkgenie": {
          "url": "https://app.backlinkgenie.com/mcp",
          "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer bg_live_your_key" }
        }
      }
    }
  3. 3

    Check it's connected

    BacklinkGenie should show a green dot and its tools in Cursor's MCP settings.

  4. 4

    Ask in agent chat

    Ask the agent to list your pitches or import a post. It asks before running tools that change anything.

We just published a comparison page. Find posts that list our competitors and import the best three into BacklinkGenie.

Used import_posts

I imported 3 posts into BacklinkGenie: a roundup on techradar.com, a guide on zapier.com and a list on nesslabs.com. The agent is qualifying them and will draft pitches you can review in BacklinkGenie or here.

Gives the agent specific post URLs to pitch. It qualifies them, finds the contact and drafts.

Cursor can use all 22 tools. See the full list on the MCP page or browse example prompts.

What stays the same as the dashboard

Cursor works on the same account, sites and mailboxes as the BacklinkGenie dashboard, so you can switch between them freely. Pitches still wait for approval, every edit goes through the quality check, and sending stays inside each mailbox's daily limit. Read more about how the outreach engine works, or check whether it's a better fit than Pitchbox or BuzzStream for your team.

Questions people ask

Where do I put the API key?

In the Authorization header of the server entry, as "Bearer bg_live_...". Keep the file out of version control if it's a project config.

Can I use it in a project instead of globally?

Yes. Put the same entry in .cursor/mcp.json at the project root to make it available only in that project.

What if the tools don't appear?

Check the key is valid and on a Growth or Agency account, then restart Cursor. A 401 means the key is wrong or revoked; a 403 means the plan doesn't include MCP access.
