How the two products are alike

Both are agents rather than outreach CRMs: they find posts in your niche, draft a pitch per post, and send from a mailbox on a separate domain so your main domain is never used for cold email. Both hold drafts for approval by default and offer MCP access for AI assistants.

Price for one site

MentionAgent starts at $99/month for one inbox (40 emails a day once warm). BacklinkGenie Starter is $99/month for one site and one managed mailbox, which starts at 4 pitches a day and climbs to 35 over about 5 weeks. Growth is $249/month for three mailboxes (about $83 each), between MentionAgent's two-inbox plan at $179 and four-inbox plan at $329. For eight, our Agency plan is $499/month and MentionAgent's is $629.

Who decides which sites get pitched

BacklinkGenie gives you a prospect list with every site considered and why, a per-site domain blocklist, and an import for post URLs you specifically want pitched. Named competitors are never contacted. MentionAgent asks whether to include rivals' roundups, but doesn't publish a bring-your-own-targets workflow.

After the link goes live

BacklinkGenie checks the published page for your link, re-checks weekly, and alerts you if it disappears or turns nofollow. That's where most outreach tools stop paying attention.

Free start

MentionAgent shows sample drafts before you pay. BacklinkGenie's free plan is a prospect report: real posts in your niche with Domain Rating and a verified contact for each, so you can judge the opportunity before paying for pitches.

Strengths and trade-offs

BacklinkGenie

AI outreach agent

Where it's strong

  • Sending domain, Google Workspace mailbox, authentication and ramp-up are included, so cold outreach never touches your main domain.
  • You see every prospect considered, can paste your own target posts, and keep a domain blocklist.
  • Every pitch passes a quality gate (recipient lock, link allowlist, no payment offers) before it can send.
  • Won links are re-checked weekly with an alert if they're removed or turned nofollow.

Where it falls short

  • A new product: fewer public reviews than tools that have been around for years.
  • Each new mailbox ramps up over about a month, so volume builds gradually.
  • No guaranteed link count; editors decide what to publish.
  • Not a full PR CRM for teams managing journalist relationships by hand.

MentionAgent

AI outreach agent

Where it's strong

  • Sending domain, inbox and warmup are bundled, so there's no deliverability setup on your side.
  • Drafts wait for approval by default, and you can drive it from Claude or Cursor over MCP.
  • Agencies can add client sites one at a time.

Where it falls short

  • Eight inboxes cost $629 a month, against $499 for eight mailboxes on our Agency plan.
  • Per-inbox volume is capped (40 a day, at most two inboxes per site without add-ons), so scaling a single site costs extra.
  • No published workflow for bringing your own target list or blocking domains.

When BacklinkGenie isn't the right pick

  • You need a tool that's been in market longer, with existing reviews to read.
  • You want to send more than one mailbox's worth of volume to a single site on day one; every new mailbox has to ramp up.

Any outreach tool is only as good as two things it can't fix on its own: the list of posts you pitch and whether your email lands. Our best-of list guide covers the first; our notes on sending from Google Workspace covers the second. If you're new to the process, start with what AI agents can and can't do in link building.

Questions people ask

Is BacklinkGenie cheaper than MentionAgent?

Not at the entry level: both start at $99/month for one mailbox on a dedicated domain. BacklinkGenie adds a free prospect report before you pay, a quality check on every email, placement checks and weekly link monitoring. At eight mailboxes it is cheaper: $499/month vs $629.

Do both send from my domain?

Neither does. Both set up a separate domain and mailbox so cold outreach can't affect your main domain.

Can I switch from MentionAgent?

Yes. Paste the posts you were targeting into BacklinkGenie's import and add any domains you've already contacted to the blocklist so nobody gets pitched twice.

See which posts you could be in.

Paste your URL. The agent finds posts in your niche where your product fits and the editor to contact for each. Free, no card.
