Turning an unlinked brand mention into a link

A page already mentions your brand or product by name but doesn't link to you. Below: the template, a filled-in example, why it works, common mistakes and the follow-up to send if there's no reply.

The template

Subject: Thanks for mentioning {product}

Hi {first name},

Thanks for including {product} in your piece on {topic}. Glad it was useful for {what they said about you}.

Would you mind linking the mention to {URL}? It helps readers find us, and saves them a search.

Thanks again,
{your first name}

Filled-in example

The situation: A blog post about a PhD student's writing setup says "I keep all my reading notes in Margin" but doesn't link to it. The product is Margin, a fictional notes app for researchers.

Subject: Thanks for mentioning Margin

Hi Jess,

Thanks for including Margin in your post on your thesis writing setup. Glad it's been useful for keeping your reading notes in one place.

Would you mind linking the mention to margin.example? It helps readers find us and saves them a search.

Thanks again,
Ana

If there's no reply: the follow-up

Send once, four to seven days later, in the same thread. Add one new reason; don't repeat the pitch.

Subject: Re: Thanks for mentioning {product}

Hi {first name},

Just a gentle nudge on this one. Totally fine if you'd rather leave it as is.

Thanks,
{your first name}

Getting the most from this template

A template saves time on structure, not on research. Every placeholder should become a detail only this editor would recognise: their name, the post, the section and why your product helps their readers. Send it from a properly authenticated outreach domain, one email per prospect, and stop after one or two follow-ups.

Unlinked mentions are the easiest wins you'll find, because the editor already likes you. Our guide to backlink monitoring explains how to spot them, and the unlinked mention definition covers when asking is worth it. If the mention has your old name or pricing, combine it with the product entry update email.

Doing this for dozens of posts a week is where most outreach stalls. BacklinkGenie finds the posts, writes a pitch like the example above for each one, and sends it from a mailbox it manages for you once you approve. See how it works.

Questions people ask

How do I find unlinked mentions?

Set up a Google Alert for your brand name, or search Google for "your brand" -site:yourdomain.com. Most backlink tools also have a mentions report that flags pages naming you without a link.

Is it pushy to ask for a link after a mention?

Not if you're brief and thankful. Many writers forget to link or assume readers will search. A short, friendly note usually gets a yes.

What if they mention me negatively?

Don't ask for a link. If the criticism is fair, reply with what you've changed. If it's wrong, correct the facts politely without asking for anything.
